Car Donation Programs That Donate Cars To The Poor, Disabled, Veterans and Those on Welfare
Free Wheels for Welfare program
Free wheels for Welfare started in the year 2006 in the State of Massachusetts. The state government started distributing free cars that have been donated by charities to those who were in dire need of them. The major charity is Good News Garage, a Lutheran charity. The main aim of this free car distribution program is to provide a way to help welfare recipients get to job interview so they can find a job and get off the welfare system. This program is officially named as “Transportation Support” and it is sometime referred as “Welfare Wheels”. For some people in Massachusetts, getting their job is very difficult by public transportation so a car is necessary. This free vehicle program empowers them with this necessary tool so they can empower themselves by getting a job and getting off welfare.
How does Wheels for Welfare program work?
Many kind hearted people donate their cars to charities-some get a tax write-off and some choose not to. There are many reasons why people choose to donate cars to charity. The car could be old, the owner could want to dump an old car just to buy a new one, or the car could belong to a deceased family member. When cars are donated to a charity and are not in working condition, the donated cars are repaired and either sold at a very low price or donated to a person or family that can prove they have the need. Certain states have partnered with charities and provide these vehicles to the people in welfare programs for the purpose of using the car to help find employment and get off the welfare system.
How Can I Get a Free Car If I’m on Welfare?
Transportation service programs (Car Donation) are available in the states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Each and every state has specific guidelines to qualify for free vehicle or transportation program. If you are already on welfare, you may qualify for this program as it is specifically for low income individuals and families. You can check out this program by contacting the State Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR). If you are living in West Virginia, you can check the donated car website for that state.
To get a vehicle, your family must be referred by Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) case manager. This will be approved by the regional Supervisor. To qualify for the referral a low-income family must be receiving temporary assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits; those families receiving only food-stamps or medical benefits will not qualify. They should actively participate in the West Virginia WORKS program. The referral will be done if the family does not have access to transportation.
If you are resident of Massachusetts, you can check that website for more details. This program is administrated by Massachusetts Rehabilitation commission (MRC) and to apply to this program, you must request a referral from MRC Counselor.
For New Hampshire residents, and Vermont also have their own specific pages.
